Mesoscale dynamics play a major role in several ocean processes, not only in the transport of momentum, heat, mass, particles and microorganisms but also in the provisioning of nutrients into the euphotic zone. Mesoscale processes can define niches where specific phytoplankton species flourish. However, this effect is not straightforward in coastal areas, which are submitted to a more complex interplay between different oceanic processes. In this context, the ETOILE campaign surveyed the CapBreton canyon area in the South-East of Bay of Biscay in early August 2017. The main objective of this study was to link the occurrence and distribution of phytoplankton with the mesoscale ocean processes. On top of the remote sensing data available for this area, such... |

A key message of the JERICO-RI consortium (2014): “The complexity of the coastal ocean cannot be well understood if interconnection between physics, biogeochemistry and biology is not guaranteed. Such integration requires new technological developments allowing continuous monitoring of a larger set of parameters”. In agreement with this consideration, several new observing systems are developed, tested and deployed in the framework of the JERICO-NEXT H2020 project, amongst which a few of them will be presented as well as some preliminary results after the first deployments. Focus will be given on coastal transports and hydrology and on benthic biodiversity. In the first case, we will present a low cost 2D moored system dedicated to acquire vertical... |

The Network of Excellence ESONET started on 1st March 2007. The kick off meeting was held in Brest on 21-22-23 March 2007. Long term monitoring of environmental processes related to ecosystem life and evolution, global changes and geohazards, is now recognized as a necessary by the scientific community. To better understand geophysical, biogeochemical, oceanographic and biological active phenomena scientists need long time series of data coming from the deep sea and the seafloor at key provinces in the world. The objective of ESONET NoE is to prepare at European level the implementation of a network of deep sea observatories around Europe. The structures of ESONET have been constructed during the first year through the main meetings (Kick off meeting... |

The Network of Excellence ESONET will enter its final year. During the first year, the main ESONET working groups were formed and the objectives of the various themes identified. Embryos of regional groups were also put in place, more or less active depending on the nodes while the main partners successfully put the project preparatory phase of large European research infrastructure EMSO-PP in place. Activities during the second year relied on that organization. The main objectives of this period were focused on: - Increasing the level of integration in the regional nodes, encouraging the participation of partners associated with the nodes in ESONET, for example by encouraging the submission of proposals for the 2nd call for demonstration missions. -... |

During the first year, the main ESONET working groups were constituted at WP level and the core groups of each ESONET node were initiated with varying progress. The related activities were starting in WPs and in some regions but not all. Consequently the main general objectives of this 2nd reported period were: - to increase the level of integration on regional nodes by encouraging the involvement of the partners associated with nodes to participate in ESONET activities, for instance by encouraging the submission of proposals for the 2nd call for demo missions. - to encourage the level of integration across ESONET nodes, for instance by preparing a more formal call for exchange of personnel. WP leaders also made efforts to increase participation in their... |
